How to Travel Cheap for Your Next Adventure

Traveling can be expensive, but there are ways to travel on a budget and save for your next adventure. If you’re looking for some tips on how to travel cheap without missing out on the best experiences, this guide is for you.

Just last year, I scored round-trip tickets to Macau for two at just around PHP 7,000. Then, earlier this year, I traveled to Kaohsiung with a round-trip airfare of a little over PHP 11,000 for two. Both trips were possible because I booked several months in advance and chose budget airlines where it made sense. In this post, I’m sharing the exact tips and strategies I use to travel cheaply, starting with how to save on flights.

Here are 10 practical tips to help you travel on a budget for your next adventure.

Book Flights Early

Booking your flights in advance usually costs less than purchasing airfare close to your departure date. I always book months ahead to get the lowest fares for my trips. Use flight comparison sites like Skyscanner or Google Flights to check fares and track price drops. I recommend booking directly through the airline’s website, as it’s easier to manage changes and get support if needed. However, platforms like Trip.com can sometimes offer lower rates, so it’s still helpful to compare prices before booking to find the most affordable option.

Fly with Budget Airlines

Flying with budget airlines, especially during their promos, can save you a ton of money on airfare. Since I’m based in the Philippines, I’ve flown with Cebu Pacific so many times because of their Piso Fare deals. I wouldn’t be able to afford to travel three times a year if it weren’t for scoring such great promos with them. If you have a go-to budget airline, be sure to follow them on social media to stay updated on their latest promos.

Stay at Budget-Friendly Accommodations

Accommodations take up a big chunk of your travel budget, but fortunately, there are plenty of budget-friendly options. From hotels to hostels and homestays, you’ll find something that suits your needs. Hotel booking platforms like Agoda and Trip.com offers a wide range of listings for every budget, and often feature discounted rates. Just be sure to read reviews to get the most value for your money.

Use Public Transportation

Use public transportation as much as possible during your trip. Hop on a bus or train to save money while exploring the city. If your destination has an efficient public transport system, take advantage of it and avoid taking cabs or ride-hailing apps unless absolutely necessary. Most destinations also offer transport cards that provide discounted fares or even unlimited rides for a fixed period, perfect for budget-conscious travelers.

Pack Light with a Carry-On

Travel light if possible to avoid checked baggage fees. This is especially helpful when flying with budget airlines, where the basic fare usually includes only 7kg of carry-on luggage. Make sure to bring only essential items so you don’t end up overpacking. In my experience, a 7kg carry-on is enough for a 3-day trip, so I’ve never had to pay extra for baggage. With a discounted fare and no added baggage fees, I always end up saving a lot on my travels.

Don’t forget travel insurance
Before your trip, consider getting travel insurance for added peace of mind. You can check flexible coverage options through SafetyWing.

Choose Affordable Destinations

Not all cities are budget-friendly, so try visiting destinations that are more affordable. For example, consider traveling to Vietnam instead of Singapore if you’re on a limited budget, and you’ll be able to enjoy your trip without stressing over every dollar. When you choose to visit affordable countries, you can stretch your budget further and experience more activities, food, and culture without constantly worrying about expenses.

Explore Free Attractions

Check your destination for free attractions and explore without having to spend money. There are plenty of tourist spots that don’t cost anything, yet still offer scenic views, memorable experiences, and Instagram-worthy photo spots. In my recent travels, I’ve found that most of the must-visit places are actually free, and you really just end up spending on food and transportation.

Look for Discounted Activities

If you’re looking for tours and activities, consider using travel platforms like KKDay or Trip.com. These platforms sometimes offer lower rates compared to paying on-site, and you can often apply promo codes for extra savings. Just make sure to check reviews from other travelers to help you choose the best options.

Travel During Off-Peak Seasons

Flights and accommodations are usually cheaper during off-peak seasons, so consider planning your trip during these times. Since these make up a large portion of your budget, traveling outside peak season can significantly lower your overall costs. For example, traveling during holidays is usually more expensive compared to going before or after the peak period.

Set a Daily Budget

Setting a budget before your trip is an essential part of traveling. It helps you manage your overall expenses and avoid overspending. Allocate a budget for each category, such as food, transportation, and activities, and adjust as needed. If you want to travel on a budget, consider skipping shopping or limiting yourself to a small souvenir. After all, it’s the experience that matters most.

Traveling is one of the most rewarding experiences, and it doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg. I hope these simple tips help you explore more while spending less.
